FORMER CARPENTERS UNION OFFICAL PLEADS GUILTY TO EMBEZZLEMENT,FALSE STATEMENTS

George Laufenberg faces up to five years in prison on each of the two counts he admitted to on Friday.

By: DANIEL OCONNOR AND MATT FIRIEDMAN

The case involving George Laufenberg is one of a series of issues facing the United Brotherhood of Carpenters union

NEWARK, N.J. — The former benefits manager for the powerful United Brotherhood of Carpenters union in New Jersey and New York pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to embezzlement and making false statements.

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped three other counts George Laufenberg was indicted on in 2019: Two additional embezzlement counts and one count of conspiracy to embezzle with a low-show employee

Laufenberg, who originally pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against him, faces up to five years in prison on each of the two counts he admitted to on Friday.

Background: Laufenberg, who was also a commissioner on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, oversaw more than $2 billion in funds for the union until he was fired in 2016, with the union citing “potential violations” of federal securities law.

Federal prosecutors originally claimed he stole from union benefit plans by using his authority to “to self-deal and benefit himself,” granting himself a $120,000 pension and $180,000 in annual deferred compensation in addition to his roughly $300,000 salary. He also allegedly gave a friend a “low-show job” with the funds that included a full salary, pension, annuity contributions and health benefits to a friend

Former carpenters union manager pleads guilty to embezzlement

Presented by AARP New Jersey

Woodworking alone just doesn’t cut it for some carpenters.

George Laufenberg, a former benefits manager for the influential United Brotherhood of Carpenters union in New Jersey and New York and commissioner on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, pleaded guilty to embezzlement and making false statements in federal court on Friday and could face up to five years in prison, reports POLITICO’s Daniel O’Connor and Matt Friedman.

Federal prosecutors dropped two additional counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy to embezzle with a low-show employee — all three from a 2019 indictment — as part of a plea deal. Prior to his firing in 2016, Laufenberg was at the helm of more than $2 billion in funds for the union, which cited “potential violations” of federal securities law as reason for his unemployment.

Originally pleading not guilty to all charges brought forth against him, Laufenberg was alleged by federal prosecutors to have stolen from union benefit plans, tallying $300,000 in addition to a salary of the same figure, and giving a “low-show job” with the funds that came accompanied with a full salary, pension, annuity contributions and health benefits, to a friend.

Laufenberg’s sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 6.
