"Douglas J. McCarron is in town today on a surprise visit. He interrupted the Regional Council’s Executive Board Meeting with a team of international reps. The official explanation seems to be a voter fraud investigation.
Rank-and-file were sent home and all Business Agents in Western Washington were ordered to turn in their electronics. Business Agents are expected to report to the Kent office at 6:30AM daily.
The rumor is that the Executive Board voted to give administrative power to the International.

 The leadership of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) has been escalating its attempts to raid the work—and workers—of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers & Allied Workers and other trades affiliated with North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) and the AFL-CIO. (For more information, read President Robinson’s Roofer to Roofer article on the inside cover of this magazine.)

 

In August, members of Roofers & Waterproofers Local 36, Los Angeles, CA, were approached by carpenters agents who handed out T-shirts in a lame attempt to get our members sign up with them. Our members immediately reported this activity, and Business Manager Cliff Smith—right before lighting the carpenters shirt on fire in protest—responded with this message in front of the Carpenters Los Angeles office:

“The agents of the carpenters union are crawling around our jobsites like cockroaches, lying to our hard-working members, trying to break our union. Trying to raid our membership and take our work. But it won’t work.

Look! They’re giving out carpenters shirts to our members, on our jobsites, like that’s impressive. Our members brought these shirts straight to us. The Roofers don’t want your carpenters rags. We don’t want your broke ass carpenters pension. The Roofers pension is fully funded. We have two pensions, plus an annuity. That’s why the carpenters are trying to break our union—because they want our pension funds to bail them out. They don’t know how to run a pension trust, so they need ours.

If the carpenters were a stand-up union, they would be trying to organize the non-union carpenter shops—not trying to raid organized union members. RAIDING ISN’T ORGANIZING. The carpenters aren’t a stand-up trade union; they are a glorified crew. The carpenters are not

members of the building trades. They are not members of the AFL-CIO. The Roofers and Waterproofers are.

And to the rank-and-file carpenters: We stand in solidarity with you, working under the sun, framing and banging nails. We salute you. But your leadership, acting in your name, taking your hard-earned dues and using it to send their agents to our jobsites, to our signatory contractors, to lie and raid our union, is putting you in shame. Don’t let your leadership act like rats. Stand up for principled trade union practices. Organize the unorganized. Build the labor movement.

Get out, carpenter rats, and don’t come back!”

If you see the carpenter doing your work or the work of another building trades craft, report it to your local union business representative immediately. If you or your fellow workers are approached by the UBC, for any reason, tell them you are not interested, and contact your business representative. We need all local union officers and members to stand together in solidarity, tell the carpenter where to go, and protect our work! ■

HE THEN FORMED AN ELECTRICIANS LOCAL 57 IN ST LOUIS WHERE HE IS UNDERCUTTING WAGES BY AS MUCH AS $18 AN HOUR AND DUMPING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS IN MARKET RECOVERY MONEY TO KEEP THIS SCUM BAG TRADE RAIDING LOCAL ALIVE

 

ANY REAL UNION MEMBER WOULD REFUSE TO STEAL THE WORK OF OTHER TRADES AND REFUSE TO STEAL THE WAGES FROM ANOTHER WORKERS POCKET.
