CARPENTERS UNION CREATING CONFUSION AT IBEW BANNER AT DAVE SINCLAIR BUICK/GMC

If you’ve driven by Dave Sinclair Buick/GMC in South County lately, you’ve probably noticed that IBEW Local 1 is bannering the dealership for using an electrical contractor that pays below area wages and benefits negotiated by Local 1.

When people see union banners, there is a general understanding that there is a Labor dispute and that the business is using a non-union contractor that pays below area standard wages and benefits negotiated by the union.

That perception was muddied last week when another sign went up at the dealership right next to Local 1’s banner – “Thank You for Using 100% Union Labor.” The two men manning the second sign were Carpenters union members representing Local 57.

THE CATCH
Sinclair is using Reinhold Electric, which employs members from Local 57, a non-AFL-CIO affiliated electrical workers “union” that has grown notorious for undercutting union labor and contractors and trying to sow confusion among business owners and the public.

Local 57’s affiliation with the Carpenters union gives it an air of legitimacy, but Local 57 is essentially a company union. Its “members” aren’t allowed to vote on contracts or vote for their leaders. Wages, working conditions and leaders are forced onto the members.

CONFUSION
“People are confused,” said IBEW Local 1 Business Representative Chuck DeMoulin. “We’ve been fielding calls about it all week. They are using the public’s general lack of knowledge about the situation to deceive people.”

Local 1 Business Representative John Kahrhoff agreed, and said: “Our boycotts are wholly based on the area standard wages and benefits established by the IBEW for electrical workers in our region. It has nothing to do with union versus non-union, and it’s a violation of law to base our public information campaign on union affiliation.”

THE HISTORY
Local 57 was formed in 2008 to compete with IBEW Local 1, causing a major rift within the building trades. It is the only known effort of its kind in the nation where an “electrical union” –or any other so-called union – is housed within a Carpenters union or any other union.

Electricians working for Local 57 receive wages and benefits far below the area standards negotiated by Local 1, and journeymen are divided into two wage tiers. The total compensation package for a Local 1 journeyman is $70.47 an hour. Local 57 journeymen receive $9.61 to $15.43 less per hour.

“Not only do the members of Local 57 earn less than the hard-won standards established by Local 1, but they also earn less than the prevailing wage established for publicly funded projects in St. Louis County, which is published by the Missouri Wage and Hour Division,” said Local 1 Business Manager Frank Jacobs.

ST. LOUIS CARPENTERS SHAKEUP
In September, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) suddenly dissolved the St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters District Council and fired the union’s top leaders. UBC merged the council’s 34 locals into the Chicago Carpenters Regional Council.

At the time, UBC General President Doug McCarron told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that an internal report prepared by UBC’s representatives precipitated the sudden action, but details were not released.

DO NOT PATRONIZE
The Sinclair dealership is located at 5655 S. Lindbergh Blvd. and is run by one of the sons of founder Dave Sinclair, who was an ardent union supporter.

IBEW Local 1 is asking the public to NOT patronize the company and to call the dealership at 314-272-4060 and demand they use an electrical contractor that pays area wages and benefits negotiated by Local 1.

MCCARRON GOT US OUT OF THE BUILDING TRADES AND THE AFL-CIO. MCCARRON IS A RAT DISGUISED AS A UNION REP . . . AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE'S WELFARE BUT HIS OWN. THE MEMBERSHIP MUST DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO RID ITSELF OF DOUG MCCARRON AND PEOPLE LIKE HIM.

THE MEMBERSHIP MUST MAKE A DEMAND FOR DEMOCRACY . . . RETURNING POWER OF MAKING UBC DECISIONS ON THE MEMBERSHIP'S MAJORITY VOTE

THE UBC MEMBERSHIP IS HOUSED WITHIN A HOLLOW SHELL OF AN ORGANIZATION . . . CONTROLLED BY INCOMPETENT PEOPLE. THE MEMBERSHIP NEEDS TO COLLECTIVELY CHANGE LOCAL AND COUNCIL BY-LAWS. THESE CHANGES CAN HAPPEN WHEN APPROACHED AS A COLLECTIVE GROUP. THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN STRENGTH IN NUMBERS . . . AND THERE WILL ALWAYS BE STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!

DO NOT THROW AWAY THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLECTIVELY BARGAIN A LABOR CONTRACT BECAUSE OF THE CURRENT UBC STRUCTURE. RIGHT TO WORK IS NOT AN ANSWER. THE ABC IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. INDIVIDUALS DO NOT HAVE A VOICE IN RIGHT TO WORK OR THE ABC SITUATIONS . . . AND COLLECTIVE VOICES ARE NOT RECOGNIZED EITHER, THEY'RE JUST REPLACED!

I agree with all of your points regarding McCarron, they are all unfortunately true.

I also agree with you in that the membership does have the ability to take back control of the UBC, but it’s unlikely they will ever use that ability to bring about change. The membership needs a leader to follow and that leader is not present.

This is why I now sadly support RTW legislation because it would enable the member to defund the UBC and the Regional Council while preserving their LU. This is, in my opinion, the only way to bring about change. No vote, no dues; no taxation without representation. RTW will force McCarron to do something he hasn’t done since he was elected, represent the working members.

The Federal Govt is of no help, obviously politicians are useless, so the only thing we could do if RTW was legal would be to withhold our dues assessments. Change would happen in less than thirty days.

Force the union to represent the members. Otherwise the " union" ( pigs at the trough) collapses.

It will be replaced by another entity that will " serve" those who are like minded and want to participate.
All the lackeys. Gone.
Imagine having a group that.
Respects labor.
Seeks fair wages.
Produces COMPETENT workers who know their craft from a to z.
Retirement is an option and not a tightly defined " perfect" number that few can realize.
Promoting their craft and product because it is actually better.

Workers protecting each others rights and god forbid. Standing together.

Ohhh wait.. We had that.

Everything woke turns to shit.

You are seeing the 5th generation of impetulant teens imploding a once respected organization.
Defund them. Burn it down.

I understand your frustration. Many of us are frustrated . . . with the US government, and its agencies; the US legal system; and of course, the UBC. I agree, the UBC is overfunded. The amount of money in the UBC’s treasury has allowed the crooked McCarron to buy his way out of trouble . . . which McCarron has done for more than 25 years.

The unnecessary dues money spent of the UBC general office and its officers is mindboggling. Every year, millions of dollars from member’s dues payments are spent on an entity (general office), within our brotherhood, which produces nothing!

The only involvement the general office has with any carpenter labor contract is when the general office crafts a substandard area labor agreement. No negotiations! No meetings with members or the area’s workers . . . just a deal!

Explain to me how the UBC membership benefits from having a GENERAL OFFICE . . . or THE INTERNATIONAL TRAINING CENTER? The UBC membership has been duped, for decades, in believing the general office and the ITC are valuable! They are not. A big waste of the membership’s money . . . nothing more than a dog and pony show for McCarron.

(CONTINUED) I agree, organizing the membership to overtake this shameful UBC administration will be as difficult as organizing nonunion workers into a union. But, this organizing effort (organizing our members) is vitally important, if this membership is to gain control of the UBC. Just cutting dues, in whichever way, is not enough. We need to have faith in our UBC members to do the right thing, by standing up . . . collectively! Proper union representation is not rocket science. It just takes desire, and the willingness to help another worker . . . putting the worker’s welfare ahead of your own.

Cutting UBC funding spending is must, but hoping to control the UBC spending though right-to-work legislation would be a disaster. An attempt to cut UBC revenue through right-to-work legislation would be very difficult due to the fact McCarron, and the general office would use its war chest to politically fight the legislation.

Workers established unions to control job site conditions . . . wages, hours worked, and job site safety. Another very important duty of membership, is to control the management of the organization. In my opinion, a union bureaucracy is important . . . but, in the case of the UBC, the bureaucracy is flooded with too many incompetent morons, and a useless general office. Eliminate the general office and the McCarron minions; restoring the membership’s vote . . . the UBC will be a better organization.

What percentage of members, within your area, read this blogsite? A membership organizing campaign, to overtake the current UBC lackeys must start. Spread the word on the jobsite.
