How many councils even offer health coverage to retirees? Theres one less now.
In NJ health benefits for a member and his spouse cost over $800.00 a month. In Philly the same coverage costs over $300.00 for a member and his spouse. Over 50% less. Why? Cause in Philly we did two things simultaneously, 1) we maintained market share, and 2) we collected benefits on behalf of working members. Now today the same assholes who ran NJ broke are doing the same to our Philly market. How long do you think Philly retirees are gonna have the same health care in retirement? Not long because market share is declining and so are collections so it’s gonna cost more to provide for the same benefits.
Guys who only have a five or ten years to go are not going to enjoy health care in retirement at an affordable price when it’s your turn to retire. You current retirees are also not to enjoy the same health care at the same costs for long either.
If you thought you were safe your not!! You’re as screwed as a first year apprentice, probably much more since they can find another career.
