Coming Together - Carpenters Pension Trust Fund for Northern California and
Western States Carpenters Pension Trust Fund
The Board of Trustees has approved the merger of the Carpenters Pension Trust Fund for Northern California into the Western States Pension Fund, effective August 31, 2026. The purpose of this letter is to inform you about the merger and how it affects you and your Carpenters Pension.
The merger comes from a position of strength. Separately, the two pension funds are financially sound, “Green-Zone” plans. Upon the merger, the combined Western States Pension Fund will become the largest Pension fund in the UBC with over $21 billion in assets, providing financial strength and economies of scale to ensure a secure pension for retirees, active Carpenters and future generations.
How will this affect you? Let’s begin with an important fact: Any Pension benefits you have earned will not change. You are entitled to the benefits you have earned through your hard work and can rest assured that those benefits will not be altered in any way. This is guaranteed by federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) laws and by the Rules and Regulations of your Pension Plan.
If you are already receiving a Northern California Carpenters Pension, your benefit will not change. You will continue to receive a monthly payment for the same amount; the only change is that your Pension will be paid from the Western States Carpenters Pension Fund.
For active Carpenters, starting September 1, 2026, any Pension benefits you earn will fall under the rules of the Western States Carpenters Pension Plan (“Western States Plan”). While the benefits and rules are in some ways similar to your current Plan, there will be changes that will be communicated to you in the coming weeks and months by Carpenters Service Administrative Corporation (CSAC), the administrative office for the Western States Plan.
Your years of credit earned under the Northern California Pension Plan will count toward the Western States Plan. When you retire, the benefit you earned through August 31, 2026, under the Northern California Plan will be added to any benefit you earn beginning September 1, 2026, under the newly combined Plan. So, the amount of your Pension will be the combined total of benefits earned under both Plans.
The Carpenter Funds Administrative Office will continue to provide hands-on, personal service to help you manage all your Carpenter benefits, including your Pension. For more than 60 years it’s been our honor to serve you; we look forward to continuing our commitment to serving you from our office in Oakland.
Sincerely,
Board of Trustees
Carpenters Pension Trust Fund for Northern California
