Carpenters in New York City are facing a danger and an opportunity.NYC carpenters contract proposal. It has a huge concession.
During a nation-wide building boom, the New York Carpenters District Council is proposing a contract with some huge give-aways. Most important, it includes establishing a new classification – “certified journey person”. A journey person would need 10,000 work hours to become “certified” – something that could take close to ten years. Meanwhile, she or he would be making $11.31 per hour less on wages and over $8.00 per hour less contributed to their pension. For apprentices, it’s even worse. The apprentice program would, in effect, be increased for a year (to five years). Meanwhile, they earn almost nothing towards their pension.

Now if your a non-Union Carpenter why in the world would you join the UBC today? Will you work throughout most of the year? Nope. Will you be charged significant fees for representation you don’t receive? Yep. Will you and your family enjoy excellent health care and a retirement with dignity? Nope. Can you choose who you pay to represent you? Nope. Can you vote to approve a contract your going to work under? Nope. Will you be charged a fine if you don’t participate in mandatory Membership participation events? Yep. Will you be paid the same wages as the “Journeyman” Carpenter next to you who is doing the same work? Nope. So what’s the point? So Doug and company can pay themselves seven figure sums while they play in the AC while you work in the heat.......
McCarron knows that by negotiating a direct give back in the cbas will create an exodus.
It will also hurt recruitment.
There is also the real and ready promise of physical harm.
Introducing this 2nd tier in essence creates the same effect by undercutting the current union member.
So let me ask?
Who is it that is cutting " area wages and standards"?
Its not the contractors. Its our own " leadership".. They effectively have become the biggest scabs weve ever dealt with.
The contractors ( most) DO NOT want to see wages cut... Why? It directly lowers their markups!!
Having sat in negotiations .... It is not the " contractors" that seek this... By and far they really dont have a problem with the scale.
Keep this in mind.
This is McCarron and the other big 5 labor bosses in bed with the democratic ( progressive) policy.
Once again mccarron lags behind about 7 to 10 years politically.
They are still effecting policy that was in sync with the progressive fascist ideology of complete governance by a centralized " ruler"
Every constitutional change to the ubc constitution has been geared to give 1 person complete control of all funds and regions. For over 20 years mccarron has created a mafia style chain of command with " paid" sole allegiance to him.
Every " team leader" every " branch manager" every council rep has been leveraged by money, position, and direct extortion by threatening thier livlihoods. Promises of reward and monies. Self dealing.
For you new ppl. The council rep no longer falls under your cba. They are at will employees who are now " supposed" to represent YOU?
Its impossible. There are 2 " unions" .
When members wake up, and are ready to act like grown men... And stand up against it...only then will it change.

Walking off jobs for however long it takes.... Nationally... Strangles McCarron in as little as 1 week.
Stop the check off dues for about 3 weeks.... And mccarron collapses.

The ubc constitution was NOT democratically installed.
It was put in place by UNELECTED delegates and reps who are coerced, blackmailed, intimidated, and promised reward, position, and cash.
